Writing An Effective Resume

A professionally prepared resume is an excellent marketing tool. It guides the interviewer through your background in a logical manner and highlights your qualifications. The focus should be on major results, contributions and achievements.

Before sitting down, evaluate your qualifications and objectives. Consider your short- and long-term goals, ideal practice environment, and preferred geographic locations. Try to identify institutions that match your value system and provide the patient populations you desire.

Your resume should include:

  • Heading: Your name, address, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail address.

  • Experience: job titles, employers' names/cities/states, dates of employment, description and scope of jobs. (Recent graduates should highlight professional nursing practice experience that showcases their ability to work in expanded roles.)

    • Start sentences using active verbs, e.g., "directed, managed, supervised."
    • Include any research projects, teaching responsibilities on the job or within the community, managerial experience, and expertise with computer software.
    • Discuss any advanced technological or diagnostic procedures that increase your autonomy or are typically unique to other specialists or physicians.
    • Mention relevant military or volunteer experience, including organizing community events.

  • Education: names and locations of schools attended, degrees awarded, dates graduated.

    • Include current licensure and certification information.

  • Additional Information: memberships in professional and community-oriented associations, awards received, published manuscripts, completed research or written grants.

    • Save other pertinent information for your cover letter or face-to-face interview.

  • References: it is recommended that references not be included.

    • State "references will be furnished upon request."

The physical appearance of your resume is extremely important. Be neat, well–organized and concise. Make sure that the original copy is well-spaced, uncluttered and easy to read. Check carefully for punctuation and spelling errors. Once completed, have the resume professionally printed on high–quality paper.
